Third Thursday Challenge: Use your tools for a chance at some CraftySteals goodies!!

Good morning CraftyStealers!

It’s the Third Thursday of the month, so that means that it is challenge time on the blog again!  I’m still on a “use your stash” kick, and thought we’d dig out some tools.  Punches to be more exact.  Other than that, I’m not going to be picky – feel free to use any kind of punch (or punches) you have.  Circle punches, shapes, border punches…whatever you have! Just use them on a card, layout or other project.

You have all weekend to make your projects and upload them to the LinkyTool at the bottom of this post (where it says “Click Here to Enter).  The LinkyTool will be open until 11:59 pm CST on Sunday night.  I’ll let random.org pick a winner and will announce the winner on the blog Monday.  The winner will receive some CraftySteals goodies.

I think I’ll go pull out some punches now and play along with all of you!

Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you back here in a few days for Sunday School.

Webspiration Wednesday: Carolina Breeze {Teresa Collins}

Hi there CraftyStealers!

I have a little confession to make.  Up until I started working at CraftySteals, I hadn’t actually heard of Teresa Collins.  Then I started seeing all of the beautiful Teresa Collins collections that CraftySteals was offering, and I couldn’t believe I had been in the dark about her products! If I had to describe them in one word – it would be classic.  From the baby themes to the sports themes to the holiday themes – they all have a common elegance to them. Today’s steal, Carolina Breeze, is no different – and I absolutely love the creamy yellows mixed in with blacks and greys.  Such a versatile color combo! (Can I also say that I think it is so sweet that she named the papers after the women in her family because she is from North Carolina?)

Here you can see the “A” sides, but if you take a look at this link, you can hover over each paper and see the “B” sides.  And to be honest, I tend to be a “B” side scrapper – I just seem more drawn to them!

Teresa Collins has a very talented design team that comes up with some novel ways to use her papers.   I rummaged around and found some incredible projects featuring Carolina Breeze.  Here are a few that I found…

I thought this layout by Stacey Michaud was perfect for this time of year.  Don’t you love the creativity of rolling papers for diplomas? If you like dabbling in home decor, Julie Jacob made this Blessings banner using her Cricut.  You can click on the photo to get back to her tutorial. If you like to do 2-page layouts, here is a rare design team two-pager by Collette.  You can click on the photo to see her tutorial on the acetate film flower on the right page. Here’s a beautiful layout complete with misted background by Julie Jacob:The last DT project from the blog that caught my eye was this tag by Sesil Cratin.  What a beautiful tag for that summer wedding gift. Teresa Collins herself is also a teacher and creator.  She shares her life and projects on her blog, including this gorgeous mini-album (if you click on the link you can see the other pages as well as some other Carolina Breeze projects):I just can’t get over how pretty this collection is! I have a feeling they won’t last too long today, so make sure to steal yours soon!

Have a great Wednesday, and don’t forget to check back in tomorrow to see what the Third Thursday Challenge will bring this month!

Sunday School: Paper flower embellishments

Good morning!

I don’t know why, but I seem to be on a paper flower making roll lately.  Maybe it’s all of the rain that is making the real flowers bloom, but I have a feeling that it is all of the beautiful papers that have been landing on my desk lately.  Last week, I showed you how to make rolled paper flowers, and today I’m going to do another type of flower – this one flatter, and much more suitable for a card or layout (though, they would also be great on other altered projects).

When I was searching the web for inspiration for the Studio Calico Memoir Collection kit, I ran across this layout by SC DT member, Kelly Noel:

I made a mental note that I loved that flower, and that I should try to recreate it (or find her tutorial).  Well, I never found a tutorial, but after looking at it, I was reminded of the folded paper Christmas trees I made last year, and fiddled around with some paper circles until I got the flower I wanted!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 11 paper circles.  I made mine using a 2.5″ circle punch and the My Mind’s Eye Stella & Rose collection. If you use a smaller punch, you’ll need less circles.
  • 1 smaller circle/scalloped circle in a coordinating pattern (mine is from the MME Lush collection).
  • Button/brad/bling for the center of the flower (MME Stella & Rose buttons) .
  • Adhesive of your choice

Take one of the large circles and fold it in half, but only put a crease in a small part (this will be the “bottom” that will go to the center of the flower). Now fold the right side at an angle away from the center (so that the corner of the crease is at the center crease you just made).  You will fold about 2/3 down. Now fold that remaining 1/3 back in the other direction (towards the center of the circle.Flip the circle over and do the same folds on the other side.Open up the middle fold.  This is your petal. Repeat with 9 other circles.Take the remaining circle and cover it with adhesive.Attach a “petal” taking care to try to put the edge near the center.Repeat with the other “petals”, forming the big flower.Attach the smaller circle with adhesive to the center of the flower. You can also add an embellishment to the center if you’d like. (I used some jute to attach a button).  Now attach it to your project! I made this card for my fabulous mom to give to her on her day.Next Sunday, I’ll show you how to make some more paper embellishments, but they won’t be flowers (a shocker!).

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the special women out there! Enjoy the day, and I hope you all get a chance to “steal” some crafty time for yourself – I know I plan to!

Webspiration Wednesday – Embossing Powder Tips and Tricks

Good morning!

Last week, I helped my aunt move, and as we were packing up her craft area, I found a few jars of embossing powder.  I looked around for the heat gun (trying to keep her stuff organized), but couldn’t find one.  When I asked her about it, she told me she didn’t have one, that she uses the heat from her desk lightbulb.  So simple, I hadn’t even considered it (instead, I bought a heat tool!).  When I heard today’s steal was Martha Stewart’s Embossing Powder, I thought it would be the perfect time to find out what other embossing powder tricks were out there that I didn’t know about!

If you haven’t ever used embossing powder, it is very simple.  All you need is an inkpad (I have a pad of clear VersaMark ink that I use most often when embossing), a stamp, embossing powder and a heat source (heat tool, lightbulb or even a TOASTER! – just be careful not to set your paper on fire ;) ).

Here is a basic video on how to use embossing powder with both versamark ink and colored ink.

The interesting thing about embossing powder is how many different materials it can be used on beyond paper or cardstock.

Here is a video from ink guru, Jennifer McGuire on embossing on vellum:

You can also use it on metal. This is a video by a blogger, BugJunkie, that shows you how to use glittered embossing powder (like today’s steal) to make your own custom brads:

Buttons can also be altered with embossing powder. Here is a Hero Arts tutorial on embossing on buttons:

You can even use it on ribbon! Here’s another Jennifer McGuire video from Hero Arts, showing you a few ways to do just that:

And to think, just a few weeks ago, some of you were telling me that you rarely used the brads, buttons or ribbons in your stash! Well, here’s a way to update them and make them match whatever project you are working on! So steal some of Martha’s finest embossing powder and see what you can come up with!

Have a great Wednesday!

Sunday School: Paper Flowers and a Wreath for Mom

Good morning!

It seems like there is a LOT going on in May.  Teacher Appreciation Week, graduations, last minute programs and parties at schools, the end of sports seasons, and of course Mother’s Day!

Last week I got an email from our PTA that the Teacher Appreciation Week “assignment” for Monday is to bring our teacher a flower.  I immediately thought I should make one, and that a simple paper flower would be perfect.  Enter who else, but Martha.

A LONG time ago, I used to subscribe to Martha Stewart Living (back when I actually had time to read the magazines, and honestly, before I could find most of the same information online or through Pinterest or awesome blogs).  Martha always has a way of creating simple beauty, and in one issue, she featured some paper flowers that were made of rolled paper.  A few months ago I was reminded of these roses when I saw a wreath with similar flowers, though more complicated and made of felt on Pinterest (The pin was from an etsy shop, ItzFitz that has some GORGEOUS wreaths to check out!).

Once I started making the rose for the teacher, I was inspired to also make a wreath – but with paper flowers for my mom.  I used the oh-so-adorable Lime Twist “Life’s A Party” , some cute Jenni Bowlin buttons and papers from the Jenni Bowlin Crafting Kit #3 to create the flowers.

To make rolled paper flowers, you will need:

  • Patterned paper
  • trimmer
  • Scissors
  • Glue dots or some kind of dry adhesive
  • A compass if you need to have perfect circles :)

First, use your trimmer to cut squares – the larger your square, the larger the rose.  (Or you could do what I do and free cut rectangular “squares”).Now, if you want a perfect circle, pull out your compass at this stage, or skip step one and use your Cricut or Silhouette to make circles.  I did neither, and cut imperfect circles by hand. :) Using your scissors, cut the circle into a spiral, leaving a small circle in the middle.  This doesn’t need to be perfectly done.  Beginning on the outside, roll the end of the spiral into a circle.  Use a bit of glue (glue dot) to make the edge stay put.Continue rolling and rolling until you have run out of spiral.  Stick a nice big glue dot on the circle (in the middle of the spiral) and kind of smush your flower down onto it to hold it together.  You may also need to put more adhesive as you roll (the bigger the flower, the more adhesive I seemed to use as I went).Flower is done! You can add a little bling to the middle of the flower, or a button, or even a circle of more paper.  Or you could just leave it as is!To make the flower for the teacher, I punched a hole in the circle before I rolled the flower.  Then I added a little quick-dry liquid glue to the center and slid in a pencil (added a little bling to camouflage  the eraser). These were made with paper from Jenni Bowlin’s Crafting Kit #3.To make the wreath, I mounted a lot of flowers on brown American Crafts cardstock, then hot glued the cardstock to a grapevine wreath (also adding a bit of ribbon to hang the wreath with). I made some paper leaves with the scraps.  To give it more of a chance to hold up against the elements, I sprayed (or more like shellacked) the papers with a clear finishing spray. These were all papers from MME’s Lime Twist “Life of the Party.”So easy to make a flower for your favorite teacher, mom or grandma, or even quickly make a gift that they can admire every day as they walk in the door! These flowers are so simple that your children, grandchildren or students can even join in on the fun.

I hope you all have a fantastic Sunday!

National Scrapbook Day Challenge – Take Two!

It’s officially mid-day here in North Texas, and that means that it’s time for another CraftySteals challenge!

This time, I want you to make a layout or card using at least one SCRAP.  If you are anything like me, you will have a ton of papers to choose from! ;)

Just upload your finished project to the LinkyTool at the bottom of this post in order to have the chance at some CraftySteals goodies!

Remember, entries for both challenges need to be uploaded by next Saturday night at midnight CST in order to be considered for the randomly drawn prize.  You can upload your pictures using a link from a blog, or photo sharing site like Flickr, Photobucket, (public) Facebook, etc.

Oh, and just one more word of warning…you only have until midnight tonight to use that special code: NSD2012.  Take advantage and you will get 10% on your entire purchase – but it (and the steals) won’t last too long!

Have a great afternoon getting crafty, and be sure to check in at the Craft Room.  I’ll be in and out (we have a baseball game today of course), but I’ll definitely be checking in and crafting along with all of you!

It’s National Scrapbook Day!

It’s officially National Scrapbook Day!

Time to pull out the papers, dust off your punches and have a little fun at CraftySteals!

If you haven’t seen today’s “steal”, then I will let you in on the secret…To add a little fun to today, we are going to have a couple of challenges on the blog.  One starting right now, and another one at noon.

Here’s the skinny:

  • Each challenge will have a LinkyTool so that you can share photos of your completed projects (using a blog, or other photo-sharing website like Photobucket, Flickr or even a PUBLIC Facebook album).
  • Each challenge will last for a week (because we understand that some sports leagues and jobs don’t recognize NSD as a national holiday – even though they should!).
  • Challenges will close next Saturday night, May 12th at midnight CST.
  • We will RANDOMLY choose a winner for each challenge on Sunday, May 13th.
  • Winners will receive some fun CraftySteals! :)

So are you all up for your first challenge?

Our first challenge is an easy one…make a project (card, scrapbook page or altered art project) using some kind of kraft product.  It can be kraft cardstock, kraft stickers or even patterned paper with a craft background.  Get creative, make it colorful, but most of all, HAVE FUN! Want to share ideas (or your fave kraft cardstock)?  Then come and chat with each other on our forum and get to know your other CraftyStealers!

Upload your “kraft”y project to the linky tool at the bottom of this post, and then come back at noon to find out what the second challenge of the day is!

Don’t forget that the special discount code for 10% off your entire purchase is only for today – and that past steals will run out fast! Make sure to shop early to get the best picks!

I’ll see you in the Craft Room!

Webspiration Wednesday: My Mind’s Eye Lime Twist

Good morning CraftyStealers!

The warm weather is finally here to stay, the neighborhood pools have opened for business, and the kids are starting their countdown to the last day of school.  (Well, at least my kids are, and to be honest, mom’s a little bit excited for the lazy days of summer too!).  Lucky for all of us, today’s My Mind’s Eye Lime Twist steals are here just in time for summer photos with their bright colors and fun patterns.

My Mind’s Eye likes to give us more to love, and usually releases a few collections within each of their collections – and CraftySteals is offering up three of the gorgeous ones from the Lime Twist collection:

Happy Go Lucky:Life of the Party:and Out of the Blue:Seeing these papers made me think not only of summer water fun, but of family picnics, spring flowers, birthday parties for boys and girls, and even romantic getaways! There is most definitely something for everyone in Lime Twist.

As I usually do on Wednesday, I took to the web to find out what fabulous creations have been made with these collections, and I found my inspiration (not surprisingly) on the My Mind’s Eye blog.

If you are a card maker, I would be you can appreciate the adorable details in this set of invitations, sign and favors for a housewarming party.  (You can click on the first photo to go directly to the MME blog post). This next project is very timely – it’s a Father’s Day gift, and the box opens up to show you that it hold four cupcakes.  If you click on the picture, and scroll down a little, you will see the tutorial on how to make the box PLUS the designer even gives you her recipe for cupcakes. I also thought it would work great as a teacher gift, Mother’s Day gift or even something to celebrate graduations.  Who wouldn’t love receiving a box of cupcakes! :)

This beauty of a brag book was made with some Happy Go Lucky journaling spots and wallet-sized photos.  What a fantastic gift for grandma on Mother’s Day (or even as an end-of-the-year book to a favorite teacher).  (To see the whole mini, click on the photo and scroll down). On the home decor front, I found this great tutorial on how to make silhouette wall art.  I love how she layered all of the papers to make the background! That’s just a taste of what can be done with these great collections from My Mind’s Eye.  As always, we love to see what YOU are creating with your steals, so be sure to visit and share your projects on our Facebook page!

Have a great Wednesday, and Happy STEALing!

Sunday School: Make your own buttons

Good morning CraftyStealers!

Buttons are such a great way to add a little dimension and pop to a layout or card.  Sometimes, the perfect button is easy to find – but many a time, I have been searching for just the right color or size in my stash and come up empty.  Does that ever happen to you?  Well, if it does, today is your lucky day.  Today, I’m going to show you how to make your own buttons – that will go perfectly with your project.

You will need:

  • patterned paper
  • plain medium-weight cardstock
  • 3/4″ punch (or die-cut machine)
  • Small heavy duty hole punch (or crop-a-dile or die-cut machine)
  • Liquid quick-drying glue

Punch 5-6 circles (per desired button) from your cardstock and one circle from your patterned paper.  Put a bit of liquid glue on one cardstock circle and stack another on top.  Continue layering cardstock until you have the thickness you desire (I used 5 or 6), making sure to line up the edges. Now glue the patterned paper circle on top of the cardstock stack.Punch holes in it (two or four depending on what you want your button to look like).  I used my Crop-O-Dile.Use it as you would a normal button – even winding twine or thread through it if you’d like.  Here are the cards I made using some of these buttons…

These use Twinery twine, paper from Bella BLVD and the sentiment stamps are Imaginisce and Stampin’ Up.These cards use Twinery twine and the bright and summery American Crafts Margarita paper.(I know, I went a little card crazy, but it was just fun to play with these buttons and with the end of the year and a baby shower coming up, I needed some cute cards!)

Making your own buttons not only means you’ll never be without the perfect embellishment, but it also means you can make them any shape you’d like – you are only limited by your punches (or shapes on your die-cutting machine!).

Have a great Sunday!
